Evaluation of Our Re-Make Music Video

Although I found this task enjoyable some elements were challenging. Choosing a video that we felt we would be able to re-create to a good standard was a problem as getting locations and characters would be difficult. For example our original choice was Fancy by Iggy Azalea ft Charli XCX, this video had a very large cast and getting a lot of people willing to take part was a struggle. I also found the editing process to be quite hard. I had never had any experience of editing before so this was a learning process for me. Something in this area which was particularly challenging was matching up the song to the lip sync, getting the timings right for each clip was important for the whole thing to fit together.

Next year for my A2 project I think I will choose a song that I like and that I know I won’t end up hating at the end of the year. I will make sure to use a variety of different shots to make my video interesting as a lot of the shots in our re-created video were the same type. I will also plan time better next year as although we only had three weeks, getting the proportions right for filming and editing time was important.

This transition task was very helpful because I got to test out the things I will be doing next year when I make my full music video. Learning how to work the camera and set up different types of shots was very useful because having this knowledge will be helpful for next year. Learning how to use the editing software will also be useful. Although I think I will need to week on these skills to get the best result at the end of next year having this knowledge is a good start. From this experience I have learned the skills necessary for the course next year. I think having a basic understanding of how to work equipment and put things together will be very useful as I won’t have to start from scratch and learn everything new next year. Having these skills will give me a head start when thinking about how much time I will need for filming, editing etc.

I think our final product was very successful. The music video we chose to recreate was Happy by Pharrell Williams, it included one main person and then many different clips of different people. I think a successful point was the locations that we found because they had resemblance to the actual locations used in the video. We made a conscious effort to film at as many real locations as possible to make it as similar to the original as possible. However, getting a chance to use the green screen was also useful as I now have some knowledge of it for next year and use different equipment in the video makes it look interesting. Something that was unsuccessful I thought about the video was the lip syncing. I found it difficult to match the song to all the clips with the lip syncs. Also some of the transitions between the clips looked unprofessional, but with practice I think this will be improved.

Now that I have completed this task I feel a lot more confident going into A2 because I have a better understanding of the task that I will be given. I now have a basic understanding of filming and editing, when returning next year these skills can be developed therefore allowing me to make progress in my own music video. Knowing how to allocate my time to each task has made me more confident too. Now that I have done this task I think that I can make a valued decision about what song I will choose to make my video for and have some ideas about how I will shoot it.

The things that I like most about my final product are the characters. I think that although we didn’t have a big of a cast as the original video the people that were involved made it look good. I think the minion balloon scene is the best part.

Lyrics

It might seem crazy what I’m about to say
Sunshine she’s here, you can take a break
I’m a hot air balloon that could go to space
With the air, like I don’t care baby by the way

[Chorus:]
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do

[Verse 2:]
Here come bad news talking this and that, yeah,
Well, give me all you got, and don’t hold it back, yeah,
Well, I should probably warn you I’ll be just fine, yeah,
No offense to you, don’t waste your time
Here’s why

[Chorus]

Hey, come on

[Bridge:]
(happy)
Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
My level's too high
Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
I said (let me tell you now)
Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
My level's too high
Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
I said

[Chorus 2x]

Hey, come on

(happy)
Bring me down… can’t nothing…
Bring me down… my level's too high…
Bring me down… can’t nothing…
Bring me down, I said (let me tell you now)

[Chorus 2x]

Come on
